HISTORY

The Alfa Romeo 159 competed in the 1951 Formula 1 World Championship. The car was derived from the Alfa Romeo 158, designed by Gioacchino Colombo, the biggest difference was on the different rear suspension, in the 159 a De Dion suspension was used, in order to be able to further discharge the high power of the engine.

The debut of the car was immediately successful and took place at the Grand Prix of Italy in 1950, to win was Giuseppe Farina, who with that victory also won the World Championship of Formula 1 in 1950.

Juan Manuel Fangio at the wheel of the Alfa Romeo won the 1951 Formula 1 World Championship. The argentine driver won three races: GP Switzerland, GP France (shared with team-mate Luigi Fagioli) and GP Spain. After a season fight with the Ferrari of Alberto Ascari, the victory of the world came to the last Grand Prix in Spain. For Fangio it was the first title, of the five conquered, while Alfa Romeo decided to retire.
