Most people who want a relatively affordable, capable, simple off-roader look at just a small handful of cars. Many will get Wranglers, others will opt for 4Runners, and some might even spring for a Cherokee. Sure, the new Bronco joins that list, but it's hard to imagine those will be rare. If you want something less overdone, you need this 1987 Suzuki Samurai.

Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.

Even in stock form, the Samurai is a simple, capable, good 4x4. But this one, for sale from a private owner on eBay for $16,900, has so much more going for it. It's got a four-inch lift, locking differentials at both ends, a new transfer case with crawler ratios, and a power steering conversion. A brush guard, roof rack, snorkel, and a set of flood lights complement the more aggressive tires, making it look as serious as it is.

More importantly, the work seems to have been done properly. Parts have been updated or replaced throughout, with the seller claiming that the Samurai now runs perfectly. It may still be a 33-year-old car, but it's simple, sorted, and shouldn't be too unreliable or tough to fix. Add in serious capability, tidy dimensions, and off-the-wall character and this Samurai looks far more enticing than more commonplace rigs.
