2015 Season Preview

Lipsitz Brings New Attitude To UB Volleyball Program Four-Time National Champion Begins First Season As Coach

Youth will be served for the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York volleyball team in 2015, but despite the inexperience, the Bulls are loaded with talent and look to take the next step under first-year head coach Blair Brown Lipsitz.

LIPSKI

Lipsitz, a four-time national champion at Penn State, is in her first season as a collegiate head coach, but her experiences both in the NCAA and at the professional level will translate well to a team that has nine underclassmen. Despite the youth, the Bulls do bring back a group of four seniors, three of them who are beginning their fourth year in the Blue and White. Senior Megan Lipski leads the group of returnees as she enters her senior season with 514 career kills, 544 career digs and 54 service aces. Lipski had her best season in 2014 with 264 kills, which was second most on the team. She also finished second last year with 319 digs. One of the most improved players on the Bulls in 2014 was middle blocker Amber Hatchett, who also begins her final season this year. Hatchett recorded 230 of her 347 career kills during her junior season and enters this year with 223 total blocks. After playing in just six matches as a freshman, Hatchett has played in 61 matches over the last two seasons, recording 345 kills and 216 total blocks. Fellow senior Akeila Lain has seen time both in the middle and on the right side for the Bulls. Lain is UB’s active leader in career blocks with 341, as she has surpassed the 100-block mark in two of her three seasons. She also has 529 career kills for the Bulls. Senior Marissa Prinzbach begins her second season with the Bulls after transferring from the University of Connecticut. Prinzbach played in 24 matches last season, but was limited due to injuries. While healthy, Prinzbach was the team’s primary setter and she finished with 817 assists, including a career-high 55 against Florida International. As a junior, Prinzbach went over the 50-assist mark twice. The lone junior on the squad is fellow setter Megan Lin. The Taipei, Taiwan native had a career year in 2014 as she finished with 463 assists, 206 digs and 28 services aces. She had 47 assists in a match against Ball State and 42 assists against Canisius. She finished with two double-doubles on the year as a sophomore. Speaking on sophomores, the Bulls welcome back three this year, led by Cassie Shado, who was named to the All-MAC

4

Freshman Team following the 2014 season. Shado finished with 137 kills and 84 total blocks, including a stretch of at least six blocks in four of the final six matches during the year. Fellow sophomore Niki Bozinoski served as the team’s libero in her freshman campaign and led the Bulls with 427 digs, including a career-high 33 digs against Kent State. She finished in double figures in digs in all, but eight matches during the year. Rounding out the sophomore class is Fairport, NY native Tessa Ooyama, who served mostly as a serving specialist and back row player for the Bulls. She saw action in 113 sets and recorded 38 digs. She also had 18 aces on the year, including three against South Carolina State. These eight returning players are joined by a freshman class of six that may be short on experience, but by no means are they short on talent.

Kelly Fitzpatrick joins UB from Port Jefferson, NY where she earned three letters at St. Anthony’s High School. Her team finished 20-4 during her senior year and appeared in the New York State finals. Fitzpatrick was named second-team All-Long Island following her senior year. Fitzpatrick can serve as both a setter and defensive specialist for the Bulls.

Watkins joins the Bulls from Beachwood, OH where she set school records for digs in a match, kills in a season, career kills and single-season service aces. Following the year, Watkins was named to the first-team All-District as well as first-team AllConference.

Just East on the New York State Thruway comes freshman Abby Beecher, a defensive specialist from Penfield, NY. With that in mind, Coach Lipsitz put together a name to the Dupage County All-Area Team and the Sun Times challenging non-conference schedule, but one that will All-Area Team. prepare the Bulls for Mid-American Conference season. The Bulls also welcome a pair of setters to the club, both hailing from the Empire State. In conference play, the goal is always to make the MAC Tournament, something this team has done just three times. However, with this group in place, Coach Lipsitz and her staff hope that trip number four isn’t too far away.
