Jardines de Alfabia

Jardines de Alfabia

Spain, Soller

There are places in Mallorca so beautiful that you don't want to photograph them but rather paint on a canvas. One of them is the Jardines d'Alfabia, at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana. The lush gardens contrast with the verdant mountains — and blossom so lushly, thanks to the mountains' protection from the cold northern winds. This corner of serenity is perfect for a family holiday in Mallorca.

The Alfabia Gardens date back to the 13th century, during the Moorish period in the Balearic Islands. Covering an area of 120 hectares, olives, palm trees, almonds, jasmine, tropical flowers, and, of course, orange and lemon trees grow there. Do you want to know where the ripe oranges go? They are used to make fresh for visitors to the Manor House.

An integral part of the Alfabia Gardens in Mallorca is water. Streams run along the slopes, lilies and swimming swans in tiny ponds, and water murmurs peacefully in fountains. But be careful when walking along the Alley of Water. In the tunnel, formed by columns and climbing greenery, 24 fountains are hidden. One press of the button at the entrance to the tunnel — and the fountains will work, pouring water on everyone who wandered into a shady place.

In the garden's centre is a manor built in ancient times. Since the building has undergone several reconstructions, features of different styles have intertwined in its appearance: Mudejara, Baroque, and Rococo. The interior design of the house is striking in its comfort and sophistication — it was not for nothing that Queen Isabella II of Spain stayed in the estate. In the upper part of the estate, there is an observation deck from where a panorama of the mountains and a view of the lower part of the gardens opens.

The gardens are only 20 km from Palma and are easily accessible by car or bus. But we will tell you how to get to the Alfabia Gardens in Mallorca so that you will be filled with the expectation of a miracle on the way. The fact is that not far from the estate, the old Palma-Soller train stops. The train of several wooden wagons goes along the mountain serpentine, past old villages and orange groves. You need not take the train to Soller to get to the gardens but get off at the Bunyola stop.
