Sward School Celebrates Diverse Cultures in Annual Event

Students and families showcase traditions from 14 countries in a day-long immersive cultural experience.

Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123's Sward School stepped onto the global stage as it celebrated its 2nd annual World Day of Cultural Diversity on Monday, May 15. Sponsored by the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the event provided a multicultural journey to students, allowing them to immerse themselves in a global experience without leaving their school.

From classroom discussions about their family's cultural heritage to presentations by their peers, students across grade levels were not only spectators but active participants in the day-long event. They learned about the traditional clothing of Nigeria, tasted homemade enchiladas from Mexico, and admired the intricate artistry of Indian henna designs. They discovered the importance of African American heritage and listened to folk tales from Ireland.

The culminating evening event, a multicultural showcase, allowed families to share their distinct cultures with the Sward community. Homemade food, traditional attire, artwork, and historical artifacts filled the school hallways, transforming it into a global village.

Students and parents had the chance to try on traditional German lederhosen, learn a few phrases in Lebanese Arabic, and create Filipino Parol lanterns. They watched as traditional dances from Palestine were performed and listened to the stirring tunes of an Irish bagpiper. A mariachi band livened the atmosphere while students and families danced along.

Two Dabka dance groups from Andrew and Stagg high schools and Mrs. Glikis' Greek dance group provided mesmerizing performances. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in a Sudanese drum circle, try Moroccan mint tea, and admire Italian frescoes.
