Fairfax County Plans Groundbreaking Of New Lorton Library

Fairfax County is hosting a groundbreaking Saturday, Aug. 22 for construction of its renovated and expanded Lorton Library.

LORTON, VA — Fairfax County is hosting a groundbreaking Saturday, Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. for construction of its renovated and expanded Lorton Library. The new library will be located at the site of the existing library on Richmond Highway in Lorton.

The Lorton Library closed for renovation in April and construction of the renovated library is expected to take about 21 months, with a reopening planned for spring 2022. In fall 2019, funding for the complete renovation and expansion of the existing Lorton Library was approved.

The Lorton Library will be co-located with the Lorton Community Action Center and the new Lorton Community Center.

The Lorton Library, originally called the Lorton Mini Library, first opened in Williamsburg Square as a storefront location in 1980. The current library at 9520 Richmond Highway in Lorton opened in April 1990.

Members of the public attending the groundbreaking ceremony in person are requested to wear a mask or face covering. The public is asked to RSVP for either virtual or in-person attendance. They will receive updates and information as the groundbreaking date approaches.

The ceremony at 10 a.m. on Aug. 22 will be televised on Fairfax County Government Channel 1016 (Cox), and Channel 16 (Verizon/Comcast) and will be streamed.

Parking will be limited near the site of the event. Streetside parking is available on the access road parallel to Richmond Highway in front of the Lorton Library. Attendees may also park in the parking lot for the Lorton South Park little league field and cross Richmond Highway to the library site.

During construction of the new Lorton Library, the nearest Fairfax County libraries are:

  • Kingstowne Library at 6500 Landsdowne Centre in Alexandria.
  • Pohick Regional Library at 6450 Sydenstricker Road in Burke.
  • Sherwood Regional Library at 2501 Sherwood Hall Lane in Alexandria.
