LORTON, VA — Elm Street Development has announced a Lidl grocery store will anchor the new Liberty Market shopping center in Lorton. An opening date has not yet been announced.

The new Lidl store will be 30,000 square feet, and is a part of a project to transform the historic Lorton Reformatory into a new urban village. Lidl's building has already been approved by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the National Park Service, and Fairfax County’s Architectural Review Board. The store is currently pending building permits from Fairfax County.

Lidl is an international grocery chain, with an American headquarters in Arlington. They currently operate more than 20 stores in the Washington D.C., area, including locations in Woodbridge, Dumfries, and Springfield.

Lidl stores offer fresh fruit and vegetable options, in addition to meat and bakery items. They sell name-brand items, private label offerings, and European specialties, according to a recent press release.

The Lidl store, and another planned building, will act as the center of a new shopping center. The buildings are being constructed by Elm Street Developments.

The Liberty Market, where the new store will be located, is part of a larger project to repurpose the area known as Laurel Hill. NVRetail, who is representing the shopping center in real estate transactions, is looking to prelease other storefronts and multipurpose buildings in the area around the proposed Lidl location.

"With the announcement of Lidl as our anchor, we anticipate gaining significant leasing momentum at Liberty Market going into the second and third quarter of 2021,” said Judd Bostian, president of NVRetail, in a press release.

Dan Storck is the Supervisor for the Mount Vernon District of Fairfax County, where the shopping center will be located. "I am very pleased to welcome Lidl to the Lorton community and appreciate the additional retail options it will provide South County residents," Storck said in a press release. "With this announcement, we are all looking forward to seeing an increase in interested merchants in Liberty Market, leading to a vibrant, walkable, and new community gathering hub."

Bignell Watkins Hasser Architects P.C. is designing the new multi-tenant retail building that will occupy 13,000 square feet across from the Lidl. Further information on the Liberty Market development can be found on their website.
