These Cookie Monster Cookies are a fun and easy recipe to make and perfect for your Sesame Street or Cookie Monster-themed birthday party.

When Keri Lyn suggested that I come up with a recipe for Cookie Monster Cookies, my mind when to blue chocolate chip cookies with Cookie Monster eyes. EASY! I would just add blue food coloring to my famous chocolate chip cookies, and we would be set.

HA!

Instead of vibrant blue monster cookies, I had horrible green dough all four times I tested the recipe. Lucky for me, Keri Lyn had an alternate vision. Two trips to the local grocery store, and we have [what I hope will become] The Famous Cookie Monster Cookies!

These would be great for Sesame Street birthday parties, bake sales, and are perfect for your cookie lover with an incurable sweet tooth.

For this version, we start with my very favorite sugar cookie recipe. Add our scrumptious cream cheese frosting, and use a very (un)sophisticated decorating technique to get our Monster’s fur. His mouth is SO simple to make using Keebler’s Grasshopper Mint & Fudge cookies.

Tips for making Cookie Monster Cookies:

  • To achieve soft and chewy cookies, reduce the baking time by one to two minutes.
  • Store cookies in a freezer bag or airtight container in the refrigerator to preserve the cream cheese frosting.
  • Variations of Cookie Monster Cookies:
  • Use an Oreo cookie (chocolate sandwich cookies) to form Cookie Monster’s mouth.
  • Use a larger scoop for thick cookies and bake them an additional 3-4 minutes.
  • Add blue liquid food coloring to the dough for vibrant blue cookies.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the wet ingredients for an extra flavor boost.
  • Use white chocolate melting disc and brown m&m candies to form the eyes.

Ingredients:

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375.

2. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper, or butter the baking sheet (yes, use butter).

3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and baking soda until the dry ingredients are well combined.

4. Add in softened butter and mix with paddle attachment until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Scrape the sides of the bowl.

5. In a separate bowl, combine eggs and sugar. Mix at low speed until eggs and sugar are well combined.

6. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture, mixing at high speed until a soft dough forms, 1-2 minutes. *No need to chill this dough, as you will be rolling it into balls and smashing the dough with the bottom of a glass.

7. Scoop out 2 tablespoons of dough and roll it into a ball. Set cookie dough balls 3 inches apart.

8. Take the bottom of a glass and smash down on top of the cookie dough to form a rough circle. The sides will be uneven, but the rough edge cookie will be perfect for the monster’s fur look. Cookie dough should be about 1/4″ thick.

9. Bake 8-10 minutes or until the edges of the delicious cookies are golden brown. Bake time will vary, so keep an eye on those cookies!

10. Remove from the oven immediately and cool completely on a wire rack.

I like to make it with almond extract or clear vanilla to keep its light color but feel free to use regular vanilla since you will be using blue gel food coloring to color this frosting.

When your cookies have completely cooled, frost them with the cream cheese frosting. To get the fur look, place your frosting spatula flat on the cookie and then pull up, forming fur-like peaks.

Add Cookie Monster’s eyes a bit cattywampus or askew to give each cookie that Cookie Monter fun look.

For his mouth, cut the round, mint cookies so that you have one-third to eat yourself, and use the bottom 2/3 for Cookie Monster’s wide mouth.

Cookie Monster is one of our favorite Sesame Street characters. This is such an easy party dessert idea, especially if you don't have time to make homemade sugar cookies - pick some up at the grocery store and let the kids make their monster! Besides, who doesn't love Cookie Monster - blue cookies will put a smile on anyone's face.

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 cup butter-flavored shortening
