Here are the supplies you will need for your wood craft stick bird feeder. As mentioned, we found everything we needed at our local dollar store, so this project only cost us around $2, PLUS we had supplies left over for future projects. Such a deal.
Supplies needed:
– skinny wood craft sticks
– twine
– hot glue, glue gun
– bird seed
We chose the rainbow colored craft sticks, but you can use plain if you wish. It is up to you and doesn’t make a difference to the project.
Directions:
1. Start by lining the craft sticks up in a row, so they are side by side. You want about 10 in a row to get a feeder that is the ideal size.
2. Take two sticks and place a generous line of glue along the back. Press each stick to the row of craft sticks, one at the top and one at the bottom. These will act as braces that hold the set of sticks together.
3. You can now start building up your bird feeder. You will build it in a log cabin fashion. Add a generous dab of glue to the ends of your sticks and start to stack them. It is easiest to glue on two sticks, one at the top and one at the bottom. Then, glue on two additional sticks, one at each side. Continue this pattern until your bird feeder has some depth. We stacked ours about 6 rows high.
4. Take a craft stick and break it in half. This will be the perch for your bird feeder. Add a generous dab of glue to the jagged end (save the nice curved end for the outside of the feeder since that is what you will see) and press it between the two lower layers of the bird feeder. Hold it in place until it is secure. Now your birds have a place to perch while they eat.
5. Add your twine for hanging. We thread ours through each corner so our bird feeder has plenty of support. We then took all four strands and pulled them to the top of the feeder. Here we tied the twine into one main knot for hanging.
Now all you need to do is add your seed! Go ahead and fill the feeder up to the top. Don’t worry if a little seed falls out of the feeder. If you don’t like it sprinkling out just use a larger type of seed like sunflower seeds.
Hang your wood craft stick bird feeder in a place where the birds are sure to find it. We hung ours from a tree in the backyard where birds love to hang out. It didn’t take them long to discover it and dig in!
I think this bird feeder craft turned out super cute. Why not give it a try with your kiddos? If you do, be sure to check back and let me know how it goes!
