6 symptoms that need immediate attention when you are pregnant
Apart from being happy and excited, all moms-to-be are super worried about their unborn baby. All they want is that these nine months of pregnancy pass without any trouble. Though most pregnancies result in a healthy baby but pregnancy problems can and do happen.
If you are pregnant and experience any of these symptoms, call the doctor immediately:
Extreme vomiting
Morning sickness is common during pregnancy.
It can be annoying but it’s not harmful. But if you are vomiting too much and can’t keep anything down, you need to let your doctor know. Severe vomiting can lead to dehydration, which isn’t good for the baby.
Extreme vomiting can also be a sign that you are suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum – extreme morning sickness that can last throughout your pregnancy. If vomiting is accompanied by high fever, you might need to get hospitalised for IV fluids.
Extreme pain in the abdomen
If you are less than 12 weeks pregnant and you feel sharp cramps on either side of your stomach, you need to get an ultrasound done immediately. The doctor will do this to check if you have an ectopic pregnancy, the one in which the egg has implanted itself in the fallopian tube rather than the uterus.

Even if acute pain happens later in your pregnancy, you should immediately call the doctor.
Too much watery discharge
If you are near to your delivery date, too much discharge probably means that your water has broken and you need to rush to the hospital. If you experience too much watery discharge before 37 weeks of pregnancy, call your doctor immediately. It means your amniotic sac has ruptured and you are going into preterm labor.
Bleeding
If you experience vaginal bleeding anytime when you are pregnant, you must consult your doctor. If it happens in your second and third trimester, it could mean that you have a tear in your placenta. But you don’t need to worry as mostly vaginal bleeding during pregnancy is not a long term problem. If you are in your first 12 weeks, you should know that women keep spotting during the first trimester.
Severe headache or swollen body
If you get bad headaches during your first trimester, it’s no big deal. If you have swollen ankles as your pregnancy progresses, it just means that your body is retaining fluid. But if you experience splitting headache during the second and third trimester and your hands and face are swollen, get yourself checked, you might be suffering from preeclampsia (pregnancy-induced high blood pressure). Another sign of preeclampsia is your vision becomes blurry suddenly.
Lack of fetal movement
If you do not feel the movement of the baby, do not call the doctor immediately. Instead, try to have a glass of fruit juice, which will increase the sugar levels of your baby that will make him/her kick. Usually, there is nothing to worry, but your doctor might ask you to get an ultrasound done just to be sure that everything is okay.
