The wheels are in motion for the Washington Commanders to build a possible new stadium in Virginia.

A source confirmed to 7News Sports Anchor Scott Abraham on Monday that the team has procured land in Prince William County, in Woodbridge, Virginia. The team spent approximately $100 million on about 200 acres of land.

The source told Abraham that the Commanders are still looking at multiple locations across Virginia, Maryland and D.C.

The story was first reported by John Keim of ESPN, who stated that the site is the team’s preferred choice for a 60,000-seat domed stadium that would be available for use year-round and include a practice facility and amphitheater. Building a stadium that could host a Super Bowl has long been considered one of the organization’s goals.

Over the last several months, momentum has been building for Washington to leave FedEx Field in Prince George's County, Maryland--- which opened in 1997. The team owns the stadium, but its lease to play at the site ends in 2026.

As with most things, the new stadium location will come down to money.

The team is trying to figure out how much money each state is willing to commit before picking a final location to build the stadium. Maryland has already said it would spend $400 million to develop the area around FedEx Field.

Many fans would love to see the new stadium return to Washington D.C. The popular choice is where RFK Stadium currently sits. There are headaches with that option because the stadium is on federal land, which means the government would be involved.
