PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL AND ANTIBACTERIAL STUDIES ON LEAF EXTRACTS OF ALTERNANTHERA BRASILIANA (L.) KUNTZE Original ArticleObjectives: The present study was to study the phytochemical and antibacterial properties of Alternanthera brasiliana leaf extracts using three different solvents (hexane, chloroform and methanol) against human pathogenic microorganism. Methods: Preliminary phytochemical screening of leaf extracts (in different solvents) of A. brasiliana were qualitatively tested using standard procedures. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) was performed to detect the phytochemical compounds present in A. brasiliana. Antibacterial activity of crude extract was determined by disc diffusion method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) were also performed for the hexane extract. Results: The preliminary qualitative phytochemical screening of hexane extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phytosterols and carbohydrates. In chloroform and methanolic extracts, all the tested phytochemicals were present except flavanoids and saponins. Alkaloids were not present in the chloroform extract. TLC analysis revealed the presence of seven compounds with Rf Conclusion: The results revealed that the hexane leaf extract of A. brasiliana alone exhibited potential antibacterial activity specifically against pathogenic E. coli (MTCC 729). values ranging from 0.173 to 0.933. Promising antibacterial activity was observed in the hexane extract with an inhibition zone of 22 mm against E. coli. Chloroform and methanolic extracts showed negligible antibacterial activities.

Bioactive Chemical Constituents and Comparative Antimicrobial Activity of Callus Culture and Adult Plant Extracts from Alternanthera tenella2009 •
Crude extracts of a callus culture (two culture media) and adult plants (two collections) from Alternanthera tenella Colla (Amaranthaceae) were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activity, in order to investigate the maintenance of antimicrobial activity of the extracts obtained from plants in vivo and in vitro. Bioassays provide an authentication of the traditional knowledge of medicinal plants. Antibacterial, antioxidant and phenolic content of nine medicinal plants (Achillea millefolium, Prunella vulgaris, P. laciniata, Lythrum salicaria, Epilobium angustifolium, E. hirsutum, Pedicularis comosa, Agrimonia eupatoria and Verbena officinalis) were investigated in connection with folkloric usages. ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to explore phytochemical profiling, antioxidant and antibacterial activity of four medicinal plants including Catharanthus roseus, Aegle marmelos, Moringa oleifera, and Ageratum conyzoids grown in Sylhet district, Bangladesh. In this study, total 11 phytochemicals were screened from methanol extract of four medicinal plants, wherein flavonoid, tannin, sterol, phenol were present in all four medicinal plants. In vitro, antioxidant activity of these medicinal plants extract was investigated by DPPH-radical scavenging assay. The Aegle marmelos exhibited the highest antioxidant activity followed by Moringa oleifera, Ageratum conyzoids, and Catharanthus roseus extract. Methanolic extracts of same medicinal plants were subjected to a test of their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas sp .and Salmonella sp. by agar disc diffusion method. The highest antibacterial potential was observed in the extract of Aegle marmelos against Salmonella sp. followed by Catharanthus roseus against Pseudomonas sp .with zone of inhibition of 18.67 mm, 15.0 mm, respectively. This study confirmed the efficacy of some native medicinal plants extract as potential source of phytochemicals, along with natural antioxidant and antimicrobials, which provide new possibilities to employing them against disease causing test organisms.
