Apple Pencil Mod

My dream of using an actual pencil as a stylus has finally been realized… well, sort of. The polycarbonate material of Apple’s updated Pencil stylus (can we all just agree to call this one ‘No. 2 Pencil’?) lends itself quite well to a bit of careful sanding and dyeing.

The texture the sandpaper carves into the polycarbonate is stunning.

Do it Yourself

I’ve been hesitant to post a tutorial for this as there is the possibility of ruining your stylus. That being said - proceed with the following steps at your own risk.

You’ll need to swing by your local Michael’s store, or head on over to Amazon.com to grab these materials:

  • Rit Synthetic Dye in the colors of your choice. For a more traditional pencil look, stick with red, orange, black, and brown.

  • Paint

  • Gloves

  • Foot or so of sewing thread

  • A pot or pan that you don’t mind ruining

  • Sandpaper, various grits

This process is definitely not an exact science, and takes a lot of careful patience in order to achieve the desired result. Set aside a couple of hours to focus on this.
