If you're one of the 40 million people who've watched You on Netflix in the past few weeks, you might have found yourself asking, "Wait, why do I find this stalker guy so attractive?" Penn Badgley, who plays Joe in the series, knows how you feel.

In an appearance on The Today Show, he said he gets why people find it confusing, and his tongue and cheek response on Twitter wasn't exactly fair.

"That was partly disingenuous on my part because the whole point is he's meant to garner a conflicted reaction," he said. "I don't see him as a portrayal of a real person, I see him as a representation of the part of us that identifies with him. The part of us that is a troll; that part of us that is victim blaming; the part of us that is privileged and blind. We're meant to identify with him."

Another conflicting part of playing Joe was that, in Penn's opinion, the internet made it too easy for him to stalk Beck like he did.

"The whole point is that Joe is actually not a mastermind," he said. "He's actually, in some ways, extremely average... It's this really interesting thing where you're seeing the trajectory of a soul, of a man and he's just completely obsessive and compulsive and believing that he's operating by the logic of a true romantic."
