When I was little, I used to take off my 3-D glasses in the middle of movies because I thought the blue and red lines looked so much cooler than 3-D. Portland-based tattoo artist Winston the Whale clearly feels the same way.

Winston started making a name for himself with his vintage 3-D-inspired body art designs about six months ago when a friend asked him for a 3-D skull tattoo. "It was totally experimental and I really wasn't sure how it would look," he told BuzzFeed, "but it turned out awesome."

Once he posted the 3-D skull ink on his Instagram page, he started receiving  requests for similar blue and red designs."It was really crazy how quickly people reacted to it," he said.

"I think [people] like [3-D tattoos] so much because they are just for fun and very trippy to look at," he told BuzzFeed. "It's also very nostalgic. Everyone knows that classic red and blue 3-D look and so it is something that is familiar for them."

Winston's designs are clean, linear, and playful. Although he believes that more complex tattoos have their place, he thinks that it's refreshing to look at something that's just simple and fun.
