Green clay: benefits & use in skincare routines

The properties of natural green clay can have an enriching effect on the skin and body. Using green clay as part of your skincare routine can help balance oily skin, detoxify impurities and improve skin tone and complexion.

What is green clay?

Clays are soft, mineral-rich materials that form naturally in the earth, as a result of rocks gradually weathering. There are many different colours of clay, but green clay, also called illite, is the most popular clay for use in skin care treatments. This kind of clay is common in the south of France, and is known as French green clay.

Green clay is normally pale green in colour.

How does green clay work as a skincare treatment?

Clays have been used as a natural cosmetic for centuries, due to their unique physical and chemical properties. They are often applied as face masks to remedy impurities and improve skin health.

Using clays as a skincare treatment allows a unique molecular exchange to take place between the clay and the skin. When placed in contact with the skin, negatively-charged clay with salt minerals attracts positive ions. These include debris and impurities, which are drawn out from the skin and replaced with minerals from the clay.

Green clay is naturally rich in elements such as iron oxide which can help fight bacteria, and also has a layered structure which makes it highly absorbent. As such, green clay is an effective, natural method of clearing impurities and absorbing excess oils from the skin.

What are the benefits of using green clay?

Green clay gently cleans and decongests the skin. It is a natural exfoliant and stimulant, and also works as a pore-tightening toner. Regular use can rebalance, soften and brighten the skin to improve overall complexion.

As green clay imbues the skin with restorative, organic minerals, all skin types can benefit from using it. However, the absorbent and detoxifying properties of green clay make it especially suitable for skin that is oily, or prone to imperfections.

How can I use green clay in my beauty routine?

A green clay mask can make an excellent addition to your regular beauty routine.

After cleansing, apply a thin layer of Darphin’s Skin Mat Purifying Aromatic Clay Mask to the face and neck to gently purify the skin and improve complexion. Leave for 10 minutes, then rinse with tepid water. Follow with a serum and a moisturiser.

While oily and combination skin types can benefit from weekly green clay masks, use every fortnight or as needed on normal or dry skin.
