Michael Jordan’s Mercedes SLR McLaren 722 Is For Sale on eBay

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren for sale on eBay combines two powerful elements. First, it’s an ultra-exotic, extremely fast supercar with only 1,000 miles of use. And then, there’s this: It was owned by a basketball player named Michael Jordan. That combination is producing media attention and spirited bidding.

After 16 bids, the current high mark is $243,600. Crave Luxury Auto in Woodlands, Tex is offering the Mercedes SLR McLaren with a Buy-It-Now price of $695,570.

The Light and Sporty Mercedes SLR McLaren

Daimler AG and McLaren Automotive teamed up in a joint venture to build the SLR between 2003 and 2010. The project produced about 2,200 SLRs over those years.

McLaren assembled the cars in Woking, England. Mercedes owned 40 percent of McLaren at that time. SLR stands for “Sport Leicht Rennsport.” It is indeed a lightweight, very sporty car—first shown at the Detroit Auto Show in 1999 as the Vision SLR concept.

The Vision SLR was the concept that turned into the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

Jordan’s car for sale is the more powerful “722 Edition,” introduced in 2007. The supercharged V-8 outputs 641 horsepower—up from merely 617 hp in the standard edition.

The goal was to sell 150 units of the 722 hardtop and 150 more of the 722S convertible. The price tag was $1 million, but Mercedes-Benz didn’t originally sell the cars in the US.

The 722 refers to the starting number of the late Stirling Moss’s 300 SLR, which he co-drove (with Denis Jenkinson) to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia.

The 722 can reach 62 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds and attain 209 mph. It had several improvements over the standard car, including new 19-inch alloy wheels, a firmer ride via a retuned suspension, and a lower ride height. In keeping with the added power, there were also larger brake pads. The special red 722 badging is a nice touch.

The Greatest of All Time

Michael Jordan’s Mercedes SLR McLaren—in Crystal Antimony Grey with black interior—has a 5.5-liter supercharged V-8 and a five-speed automatic. There’s a side exhaust, carbon fiber front splitter, and rear diffuser, plus ample use of carbon fiber on the seats and center console. The headliner is Alcantara, and an AMG race timer is included.

The interior of Michael Jordan's SLR features leather, carbon fiber, and Alcantara.

The Mercedes SLR McLaren, chassis number 001327, has just about 1,000 miles on it. But the world’s greatest hoopster has other vehicles to take up his time. Over the years, Jordan (with an estimated net worth of $1.6 billion) been spotted with these models:

  • Aston Martin DB9 Volante and DB7 Volante
  • Bentley Continental GT
  • Cadillac XLR-V
  • Chevrolet Corvettes C4 and C5 (See our rundown of all Corvette generations)
  • Ferrari 550 Maranello and 512 TR
  • Mercedes-Benz S600 Lorinser and SL55 AMG
  • Porsche 911 Turbo “slant nose” Cabriolet and a 911 Turbo S
  • Range Rover HSE

(Sorry, Mr. Jordan, if we’re missing a ride or two.)

Jordan, in mid-2020, auctioned his S600 Mercedes via eBay. He likes cars and is continuously updating his collection.

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was produced from 2003 to 2010. Only about 2,200 were built.

Although the car is exceedingly rare, eBay has a dozen or so other Mercedes-Benz SLR McLarens for sale. Parts, ranging from a dipstick to hubcaps, are also available. A lot comes from the aftermarket, but owners and tuners can also search for OEM-supplied parts for the Benz SLR McLaren.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Michael Jordan is widely considered the greatest basketball player of all time. He won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. Jordan placed second to Babe Ruth in a 1999 AP list of the greatest athletes in the 20th century.
