This auction is for 20, 30, 60 fresh seeds of either variety or a Mix of all (20, 30, 60 of each variety), home grown organically in the UK of these hardy ornamental clump forming grasses. Carex buchananii and comans hail from New Zealand and Carex pendula (collected in Lincolnshire and Lancashire, UK) is a UK native found across Eurasia, Northwest Africa and the Middle East.
Carex buchananii and comans are great plants for adding colour and structure to pots, planters, scree gardens, prairie type plantings, cottage gardens, rockeries etc. They do well on various soil types and moisture levels, preferring well drained sites in full sun to semi-shade. They can be situated at the front or middle of the border, with Carex comans forms growing to around 50cm high and across and Carex buchananii growing to 75cm high and across. They are clump forming evergreen grasses, producing a lovely mop head of very slender, shimmering silvery green leaves in Carex comans and C. comans 'Frosted Curls' (Photo 1, 2, 3, 4) and chocolate brown in C. comans 'Hot Chocolate'. Carex buchananii (Photo 5, 6, 7) is more upright in character with narrow, evergreen, orange-brown, arching leaves with curling tips, and brown flowering spikes in late summer. The flowers on both species are somewhat insignificant and are often concealed amongst the flowing locks!
Carex pendula (Photo 8, 9, 10) is found growing in various dry to damp semi - shaded hedgerows, stream sides and woodlands as well as freshwater wetland habitats. It can often be found growing in damp or flooded woodland areas at water depths no greater than 30cm. It is a great structural plant for adding to sunny, semi-shaded to fully shaded spots and is a fine woodland, bog or marginal plant, suitable for large natural ponds, streams, rivers and lakes, giving year round interest and can be used for waste water tratment and phytoremediation. Great for planting among ferns, Hostas etc. It is quite a vigorous plant and does well on various pH/soil types. It is evergreen, growing to ~1.8m high (though often smaller) and forms a thick tuft of dark green, simple, linear, pleated, alternate leaves, 30 - 40cm long. Bright Yellow Flowers occur on long pendulous catkin-like spikes in May - June, followed by green brown fruits. A great plant for wildlife and increasing biodiversity, with roots providing hiding places and egg laying sites for aquatic organisms and stems provide a climbing site for emerging larvae and a hiding place for birds and mammals.
