Danica Patrick is the latest celebrity to open up about getting her breast implants removed.

On April 29, the former NASCAR driver shared a lengthy message on Instagram, revealing various health issues she faced as a result of her implants, which she got in November 2014. “I was really fit, but I didn't have boobs. So I got them. Everything went well, and I was happy with them,” she wrote in her caption. By 2018 she began noticing a few issues, but “the wheels came off” in 2020.

“I had cycle irregularity, gained more weight, my hair wasn’t looking healthy at all and my face was a different shape (weird I know),” Patrick said. “So I went down the rabbit hole to figure it out. I did every test that could be done.” She proceeded to provide a hefty list of symptoms including hypothyroidism, severe leaky gut, hypoglycemia, adrenal fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, hair loss, and more. A standout on the list was capsular contracture, which refers to hardened scar tissue around her implants.

Along with her message, Patrick posted a side-by-side photo of her face a few hours prior to her surgery on Wednesday, April 27, and a few hours after. “Within hours after surgery this is what I noticed—my face had more color and less dark circles (no food before the second pic), my face started producing oil again, I could take a 30% deeper breath into my chest already, and I had so much energy when I woke up (and surgery was at 230pm),” she wrote.

After sharing her initial post, Danica Patrick continued to discuss her experience on Instagram Stories. In one post, she said that the “most annoying part” of having her implants removed was the postsurgery drains she was required to wear. In a later post, she shared that they were removed after 47 hours.

“I wasn’t sure I was ready to share this...but then I remembered that true vulnerability is sharing something you’re not really ready to,” Patrick said in her initial post. “So here it is.”
