A month after welcoming her first child via surrogacy, Paris Hilton is opening up about deciding not to get pregnant.

Hilton and her husband, Carter Reum, revealed the birth of their son, Phoenix Barron Hilton Reum, on Instagram in January, writing, “You are already loved beyond words.” In the February issue of Glamour UK, Hilton explained that she opted to keep her surrogacy plans a secret so she could share the experience with her husband privately. “I felt my life has been so public, I really wanted to keep it private,” Hilton said. “Of course, it was hard not to tell anyone, because it’s such an exciting time. But I also loved being able to share this with just Carter.”

Now she's ready to open up about her decision to choose surrogacy. “I’m just so scared, I think, again, leading back to [Provo Canyon School], of even being in a doctor’s office, just all of that. The shots, the IVs that they put in,” she said, referencing the medical and sexual abuse Hilton says she endured at the Utah boarding school during her childhood. “When I was in The Simple Life, I had to be in a room when a woman was giving birth and that traumatized me as well. But I want a family so bad, it’s just the physical part of doing it. I’m just so scared…childbirth and death are the two things that scare me more than anything in the world.”

When looking into options, Paris Hilton said Kim Kardashian, who welcomed two of her four children via surrogacy, gave the best advice. “I'm using the same doctor—Dr. Huang, who's the best—and he has a concierge team that deals with everything and interviews [the surrogate] to make sure that they're healthy,” she said.

Of her baby boy, Hilton added, “I’m so obsessed with my little angel, and when he looks into my eyes, I just melt. He’s such a good baby.”
