An adult Oriental Hornet (Vespa orientalis), an invasive species that has colonised Chile only in the last few years, drinks at the edge of a mountain stream in the Andes mountains near Santiago de Chile. The wasp is regarded as a pest because of damage it may cause to fruit orchards and honey bee colonies. Interestingly, unlike most insects, this hornet has a small organ in the thorax that enables it to raise it’s body temperature up to 10 degrees Celsius higher than the surrounding air, increasing the wasps activity level and flight velocity.
