The nationwide strike vote by the Customs and Immigration Union and the Public Service Alliance of Canada, representing over 9,000 CBSA employees, began on April 10 and concludes on May 15. Despite offers from the Treasury Board and CBSA representatives during Public Interest Commission hearings on April 22, the Unions' bargaining team rejected them, emphasizing their own propositions presented on April 10. With significant disparities between the two sides, the PIC board will soon offer a non-binding recommendation based on the hearings. Although federal legislation typically mandates a 30-day timeline for the PIC's recommendation, extensions are possible at the chair's discretion. If the union members' vote supports a strike, CBSA employees could legally strike seven days after the PIC report's release. Given the essential status of the majority of CBSA employees, any strike action would likely involve work-to-rule actions and demonstrations, potentially causing delays in customs clearance for goods and longer wait times for travelers.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC), representing over 9,000 employees at Canadian National Railway Co. (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. (CPKC), voted in favor of a strike on May 1st. Following this decision, a mandatory 21-day "cooling off" period was initiated. During this period, both the TCRC and the railway companies have engaged in additional negotiations with the assistance of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services (FMCS) in an attempt to reach a new contract agreement. Should these negotiations fail to produce a satisfactory agreement, a work stoppage is scheduled to commence as early as May 22nd, provided a mandatory 72-hour notice is given. The contract between the railway lines and the unionized workers expired on December 21, 2023. If no new agreement is reached, there is a risk of a complete shutdown of rail services across Canada, affecting both freight and commuter transportation operations, which are handled by conductors, locomotive engineers, yard workers, and rail traffic controllers. In anticipation of potential disruptions, customers are advised to prepare for significant backlogs and an extended recovery period if the strike persists for more than a few days. This situation underscores the potential impact on supply chains and transportation networks nationwide.
