THIS. IS. GREATNESS. The accident in which 6 IDF soldiers were killed yesterday, seems to have transpired when a tank fired at a mistaken target in Gaza. It hit the explosives in a terror tunnel which IDF engineer corps soldiers were preparing for detonation. Ayal Shachar, father of Amit, one of the soldiers killed in the accident and pictured below, went on Israeli radio today to share the following message: “I am thinking about the tank soldiers who were involved in what happened. I want to remove any burden from their shoulders. They must know that we have no complaint against them. I say to them - We know about your strength and the danger with which you put yourselves in daily. Accidents happen. None of us have even the smallest complaint against you. There is no guilt here. We support you and send you strength. I say this not only in my name and my wife’s name but also in Amit’s name. I know him and this is what he believed in.”
We need an emoji with tears, I think.
Humbling to the point of tears. May all of their memories be a blessing.
So sad
I realise this is scant comfort to the families of these brave soldiers who have perished in this incident. No war or serious conflict in modern history has been conducted without tragic incidents of deadly friendly fire. In this unique battlefield setting and fighting terrorists who: - embrace their own deaths surrounded themselves with human shields glory in the death and destruction of the local civilian population have had more than a decade to prepare the ultimate killing ground It is, alas, a sad inevitability that awful losses like this will occur. I wish all the families of these courageous heroes long life.
We support you and send you strength!! BDE HYD

Indeed, the burden on the guys in the tank must be enormous. The grace shown by the father in the midst of such grief is extraordinary. War is not clinical; it is messy. I think sometimes people lose sight of that -- expecting perfect precision and then excoriating the warrior or attributing evil motives to him when he fails to live up to that perfection. It would certainly be understandable if this father did that, so it had to be deeply meaningful to his son's suffering comrades...
None of us can begin to imagine what all these amazing young people go through every day in Gaza. To defend us and make sure Israel lives no matter what. What this father says despite the grief is so powerful.

3moTo be able to reflect this exemplar humanity, compassion and grace immediately, while grieving such a huge loss, is remarkable. THIS IS ISRAEL.
