De-Consumerism

De-Consumerism

I was intrigued after watching an interesting video on Immunity building (https://bit.ly/3udPYNP), which was recommended by my college classmate.

There was beautiful insights on regular Fasting as a means to boost Immunity. This set me thinking that Fasting could well be abstracted to beyond just food.

I had also seen recent articles on Circular Economy, and many corporates interested in taking up this as one of the major themes.

These two concepts could well be integrated - Fasting + Circular Economy. It may sound surprising where could be the synergy to combine these two diverse themes. The rest of the article is to discover potential synergies from these two concepts.

The current mindset for business is driven on increasing Consumerism. If there is enough commercial activities (Active Buying), that is (falsely) measured as business progress and success of any business, economy or even country.

We could pause and take a completely different (opposite) perspective to this. What if there is lesser and lesser consumerism (De-Consumerism) aka "Fasting" on all fronts - Buying lesser food (as we actually need much less food), buying less clothing (There are enough articles indicating that people in average buy way more clothes than they ever need and many are hardly used after the first few wears), buying less electronics - And the list can go on and on.

How could this act of "De-Consumerism" be converted to Business, Economic and even the Countries Growth?

If Corporates and Countries start valuing Circular Economy, then it easy to spot, that if less is purchased, then there is less to be circulated to achieve the Circular Economy Goal. If there is Budget allocated for achieving Circular Economy, it could very well be used to incentivize People/Business/Corporates which encourage lesser consumption.

This can be a completely novel Business Model. You buy less (food/clothing/ furniture) you get incentivized (By the Corporates/Country) - To achieve the Circular Economy Goal faster. You use less you earn more.

There could be more fancier Business Model evolved, if we had more Business Professionals working on this.

As Mahatma Gandhi said - "The world has enough for everyone's needs, but not everyone's greed," - We already have plenty and abundance to meet everyone's need. The greed of few Business/Corporates/Countries are making the Consumerism go completely overboard - and find solutions (like more energy creation, Food revolution etc) where there is possibly no problems to begin with.

Hope few progressive countries take this fresh perspective to promote De-Consumerism and achieve Circular Economy goal faster. Hope they incentivize it attractively that encourages more Business Professionals to come out with smarter and elegant Business Models that promote De-Consumerism.
