How to make a bird feeder from a soda bottle and wooden spoons.

Share story

Each year, we use new kinds of bird feeders to feathered winged out in the open.

Family Fun online has directions for a number of easy-to-build feeders that kids can make with some help from an adult. I found this one, that features old wooden spoons to “spoon feed your winged neighbors,” at http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/backyard-bird-feeder-672532.

Supplies:

1 clean 1-liter soda bottle.

Craft knife.

2 wooden kitchen spoons.

Small eye screw.

Twine for hanging.

Instructions:

Draw a half-inch asterisk on the side of the soda bottle, about 4 inches from the bottom. Rotate the bottle 90 degrees and draw another asterisk.

About 2 inches from the bottom, draw a 1-inch-wide circle opposite each asterisk.

Ask an adult to cut slits on the lines of the asterisk with a craft knife and cut out the circles.

Insert a wooden spoon handle first through each hole and then through the opposite asterisk.

Remove the bottle cap and twist a small eye screw into the top of it for hanging.

Finally, fill your feeder with birdseed, recap it, and use twine to hang it from a tree.
