Tirumalai Krishnamacharya

Krishnamacharya was a renowned scholar and master of Indian philosphy including Sanskrit and Ayurveda, an amazing healer and a Yogi known throughout India. He lived 101 years and was a man of our own time — he died in 1989.

His lifelong quest for right knowledge, his dedication and contributions to Yoga, including his sharing of the teachings to others, has culminated in the spread of Yoga around the world. Often referred to as "the father of modern yoga," Krishnamacharya is widely regarded as one of the most influential yoga teachers of the 20th century and is credited with the revival of hatha yoga. His students included B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattbhi Jois, Indra Devi, and his son T.K.V. Desikachar.

He is a bridge between the wisdom of the ancient world and modern times.

Krishnamacharya said of UG Krishnamurti, "UG is the greatest living Yogi I have ever met."

Uppaluri Gopala Krishnamurti (known as U. G. Krishnamurti) lived from 1918 till 2007, and was an Indian speaker who questioned the state of enlightenment. Although many considered him an "enlightened" person, Krishnamurti often referred to his state of being as the "natural state". He claimed that the demand for enlightenment was the only thing standing in the way of enlightenment itself, if enlightenment existed at all.

T.K.V. Desikachar

Desikachar devoted his life to studying and teaching the Yoga that his father, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, brought forth from the Great Tradition. We would not have had access to or even been able to understand Krishnamacharya’s teaching without the dedication and brilliance of his son. Desikachar understood Western mind and was able to interpret wisdom culture with clarity and precision for us all.

Mark Whitwell has spent a lifetime dedicated to studying and communicating the Great Tradition. He spent over twenty years with his teachers Krishnamacharya, the "teacher of the teachers" (who taught B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattbhi Jois, Indra Devi, and others), and his son, T.K.V. Desikachar. After first meeting these two great teachers in 1973, Mark realized the importance of their scholarship and committed his life to furthering the communication, in the process studying with many known and unknown masters, including both J and UG Krishnamurti. He was the editor of and contributor to T.K.V. Desikachar’s classic, The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Practice, and is the author of Yoga of Heart and The Promise.
