I recently spent a weekend in Portland, Oregon, home of the over-the-top donut. There are certain things you have to do while visiting Portland, and getting a snack at Voodoo Doughnut Shop (or one of the many other decadent donut shops) is high on the list.
However, after returning home, it seemed like crazy over-the-top donuts were everywhere I looked.
I saw them in magazines at the checkout counter, on TV, on Pinterest and other social media sites. It was like they were stalking me!
Not every town has a doughnut shop that specializes in heavily adorned doughnuts. So instead of trying to hunt them down, I decided to make them myself.
Now, when I say, “make them myself,” what I really mean is tweak them myself.
I took standard grocery store glazed donuts, then doctored them with all sorts of naughtiness to make colorful, towering, donuts fit for a king—or pretty much anyone with a serious sweet tooth.
To do this, all you need is:
- Glazed donuts
- Store-bought frosting
- Candy, cookies, and/or snack foods
Simply slather any variety of frosting over the top of a glazed donut, then press candy, crumbled cookies, or snacks items into the frosting. Or use a combination of all three!
I bought vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry frosting.
Then I used crushed Oreo cookies, pretzels, Confetti Teddy Grahams, M&Ms, gummy bears, Sixlets, peppermint patties, rainbow sour strips, and some leftover sprinkles I had in the pantry to decorate my donuts.
Really, you can use anything you like. Go nuts with colorful candy, or create salty-sweet combinations!
Elevating your doughnuts is fun and easy. In fact, this would make a great crafty-snack for birthday parties or weekend family breakfasts. This is definitely a special occasion kind of activity.
No technical skills are required. No rules apply. All you need is a little imagination and a whole lot of junk food!
