Anti-fur activist, Gisele Bündchen is the cover star of our August issue, dedicated to the animal kingdom. We asked the Brazilian model about her love for all creatures great and small as well as her manifesto for their protection.

The August issue of Vogue Paris is dedicated to animal protection. Is this an important issue for you?I have always been an animal lover, so I am very happy that Emmanuelle asked me to be a part of this special issue dedicated to animal protection. It's wonderful that Vogue is sending a strong message to the public to not use animal fur for clothing and hopefully using faux fur will become a trend and people will stop using real fur.

How did the photoshoot go? Could you tell us a bit about it and what happened?It is always a pleasure when I get to work with friends and it is especially fun when the shoot is with baby animals. Inez and Vinoodh brought their adorable dogs with them for the shoot. They were shy at the beginning but they got to know me and became comfortable as the day went on. On the second day I got to hold a sweet and cuddly baby fox, a baby kangaroo and a baby rabbit. It’s a profound experience to share our beautiful planet with so many remarkable creatures.

Have you ever refused to wear a fur coat? If yes, where was it and why did you refuse?Yes, I haven't done a photo shoot with fur since my early 20s, ever since I became aware of how cruel the fur industry can be.Where are your favorite places to find good fake fur?All the pieces in the shoot for this story where beautifully made. It’s hard to imagine that anyone could tell that they were faux-fur, the technology today is really that extraordinary.

What are the three actions you would recommend people take to help in the protection of animals?Firstly, I think it’s important to remember that all animals have the same right to be on this planet as we do. Second, I want to encourage all people to make conscious choices, to be aware of how clothing is made and its effect on the environment that we all share. If people like the look of fur, faux-fur will give the same visual effect without having to hurt an animal. How is progress still to be made in this area?I believe we need to strive to learn how to live in harmony with each other and all of nature. We are all living on this beautiful planet together and when we hurt one species we hurt all of us. We are all connected.
