Description

During World War II the fibres of the nettle were used to make cloth. In country areas people were encouraged to gather nettles and regular collections were made.

Flowers

Male and female flowers are borne in racemes on the same plant; male flowers, coiling, normally on the upper part, female flowers generally on lower part.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf, Cordate heart-shaped. Oval to heart-shaped, serrated, with 2 small leaflets (stipules) at each node.

Fruits Seeds

A cluster of small one-seeded fruit.

Edible

Leaves when young, in soups.

Medical

Leaves and stalks: nettles draw iron from the soil, act as a tonic for anaemia, also high in vitamin C, which helps to absorb the iron. Cleanses the blood. The roots are used to treat hair loss.
